What to do when kids don’t listen to people older than them?

Four years ago we had an employee Jacob who bought in her daughter Beth to the home to work for us and during Jacob’s working hours I had volunteered myself to take care of Beth.

Beth had attended a public school that was close to us. We had assigned someone else to drop off Beth and pick her up after school while Jacob was on duty.

Living any where we help those who have responsibilities made off as a single parent.

Beth had looked up to me not as a mother figure but something that was lacking from her as a young kid growing with no mother the child was looking for that kind of attention.

Beth had a different personality being a kid who lack attention and wanted to get away for the bad things she has done. It was Beth’s way to get attention from her father but the attention she got more was a punishment.

To me seeing Beth act this way out of love to her father it felt wrong so I had reversed it by talking to Beth and explaining what can be changed so the attention would not be her punishment from her father.

In order to discipline a child who trust no one was to scare her off with a white lie I had made up a story and everyone in the house just played along with it.

Beth wouldn’t take her nap and I told her I would bring her upstairs where Chuckie the doll was sleeping in the playroom where all the bad kids stay when they don’t obey.

Beth didn’t believe so she asked me to take a picture of Chuckie of course Beth had never knew the story was not real so I went ahead and looked for pictures from my phone.

Beth was scared later she went to her room and took her nap.

Every time Beth didn’t behave I would bring up Chuckie’s name only way she would do as what she was told to do.

Beth always asked other kids visiting the house if there was really a Chuckie and they always said yes we’re also afraid of Chuckie and we don’t enter that room.

One day Beth went upstairs to play with her playmate and she was curious to see where Chuckie was sleeping. Beth had entered the playroom and notice Chuckie was no longer there and she was wondering where he went.

I told Beth Chuckie doesn’t not only stay in one room he can sleep next to you in your room if you are not listening to other people who are older than you.

Beth got older Chuckie no longer became an issue she began doing house chorus helping me at the house.

At 6 years old Beth learned how to do the following to give her sense of responsibilities

  1. Set the table

  2. Refill water jugs

  3. Learned to take her own bath

  4. Learn to take care of her own belongings

  5. Learn to prepare her clothes before taking a bath

  6. Learn to fold her clothes and put it away

  7. Put away her toys after she had play with it

  8. Prepare her school supplies before the next day of school

Every good deed has a prize for what she had learn to do on her own this way any child would always look for something as the more she had learned to do things she had gain something toward the end.

No matter what stories you make up later the kid who had lacked attention in their life had  turn out to be a better person.

Note:

I had changed the name of the characters of the story.
