May's Wellness toward Hula Dancing

About 10 years I accidentally stumbled on dancing hula at this halau (high school). My mom was looking for a Hawaiian dress to wear for a Hawaiian party. I knew that there was a store at halau. When we visited the store there was a senior citizen ladies' class in progress and the teacher saw my mom and I said to us if we wanted to try a class all we have to do is just pay $15.00 each and we like the class then she would apply it towards our tuition. On that day that we were supposed to take the class my mom chickened out. She had never exercised a day in her life. I already paid the $30.00 so she decided to take the class and the rest is history. I must have been 43 years old at that time.

The name of the Na Wai Ola.

I did have to dance hula. My teacher at that time had a lot of students and she felt that there was a lot of favoritism.

I love dancing hula, because it helps me de-stress, and it makes me happy. It has nothing to do with other dances. Also, there are certain people that I have met along the way through hula, and I just love their aloha.

I have performed in many shows. I even have been paid for some of the gigs.

Performing has helped me get over her shyness, nervousness and technically has helped me with public speaking or performing.

There are two types of hula dancers Kahiki which is traditional hula. The other is auana which is what I call Waikiki hula. I love the latter, because those are the ones that I perform the most.

Dancing hula has helped me to learn how to be more graceful and less robotic/stiff.

My favorite Hawaiian songs to dance to is Haleakala Hula. I get to dance with three hula implements. My favorite Hawaiian artist (s) Na Leo.

I have been dancing hula for least 10 years plus.

I started dancing hula for my current teacher Kumu Mark Keali'l Ho'omalu forever change the way I looked at my hula dancing. He is very famous in the hula/Hawaiian community. If you know the move Lino & Stitch, she is the one of the singers /characters.

Dancing hula has done wonders for my mental health as well as my physical health. Hula has helped me keep positive and happy. It also has helped me to keep in shape and flexible.
