When the longing for authentic Pinoy dishes strikes in the U.S., Isla Grand stands ready to transport your taste buds back to the Philippines.

Carmina is traveling to the United States to spend time with her family. My dad planned a family gathering for Mother's Day at their favorite Pinoy restaurant . Since reservations aren’t possible, we arrived an hour early to ensure we could get a table for twelve before everyone else showed up. As my dad approached Isla Grand , the branch we visited in Pleasant Hills, California , the host at the door said they could prepare a table for twelve at five o'clock. Later, the server called my dad's name and guided us to our table. The place was bustling with people enjoying meals and celebrating Mother's Day. On our first visit to Isla Grand, I was captivated by the décor, noticing many native items that gave the place a fancy yet authentic Filipino feel. They usually have a live band, but unfortunately, there was no entertainment the night we went. My family had spoken highly of Isla Grand and encouraged us to try the Filipino dishes we’ve been missing from back home. Lech...

Butterflied Pla Pla with Buto and Mustasa from Manam Comfort Filipino

When family friends inform you of their visit to the Philippines, it’s common for them to update you on their schedule and let you know when they’re free to meet. Carmina messaged Tita Edita, suggesting lunch with Mom Violy. Tita Edita mentioned that her son and husband, Tito Rozel, would also join, which was great news for us since we were excited to see them again. As the day of our gathering approached, Tita Edita asked whether lunch or dinner would work better. Mom Violy preferred lunch, so we agreed on October 4, 2024. Later, Mom Violy noticed a post from Tita Edita mentioning they had wanted to eat at Manam but had to wait as they were number 15 in line before being served.

Mom Violy decided to make the lunch be at Manam Comfort Filipino inside Robinsons Magnolia.

Mom Violy ensured she arrived early to secure the reservation, making sure we could hold our spot as the restaurant only allowed four people. She had invited Edna to join us for lunch and had already pre-ordered the food she wanted to enjoy with her friends.

We didn't know what time our visitors would arrive.

The palabok didn't turn out as expected, partly because the noodles were already cold while Tita Edna was making comments and taking a video. It's usually not like this when it's served fresh. Regardless, the palabok still tasted the same. Meanwhile, Carmina noticed a new dish on the table—Butterflied Pla Pla (tilapia) with Buto and Mustasa.

If you don't want to eat what someone has ordered, you can choose something you like from the menu.

The choice was crispy pork kawaii small, served with garlic rice.

Everyone had a wonderful time bonding and hearing stories from each other.
